Rockabilly Day originated in 2001, when James Laureyns decided to organize a small meeting featuring Rockabilly music,
classic cars and bikes, together with Oemtata vzw.
The basic and only idea was some kind of 'lazy sunday afternoon', where people could come and enjoy the sun,
a beer, the bands and the cars...
First year started off with 'the Wildcats' (local Belgian band) and 'the Seatsniffers' (Belgium's best rockabillyband ever)
+ a reasonable number of visitors, hence the decision to continue the event into 2002...
Over the last 7 years, Rockabilly Day has been growing steadily (nearly 4500 visitors last year),
now featuring 6 bands (some of them international), a larger number of cars & bikes
(some even from Holland, Germany, France and the U.K.!), trophies, rockabilly DJ, a small, but cosy marketplace
with retro clothing and articles, vinyl & CD's...
Gradually, Rockabilly Day has been growing from its humble beginnings to a small, but very enjoyable one-day festival,
open to all kinds of visitors (even complete families) willing to take the time-machine back to the fifties for one single afternoon
(although some of the die-hard fans never seem to have quit living in this particular time).
Especially over the last 3 years, the new concept of 'Rockabilly Day' was established: a roots-Rockabilly event, showing
special interest in 50' lifestyle, clothing, hotrods & kustoms. The only intention of this being to provide an 'overdose' of
Rockabilly lifestyle to the general public, featuring quiffs, black leather and roll-up jeans 'cats' and pony-tailed 'chicks'...
Don't forget to throw in some leopard skin and flames and you should be able to get the general picture we aim at...
Our philosophy is to stay true to the 'Rockabilly spirit', after all, this is currently the only festival of its kind in Belgium
dedicated to the combination of Rockabilly music and classic cars, hotrods, kustoms, bikes... We never intend to become as big as
other festivals like 'Hemsby' or 'Rockabilly Rave' (UK) or 'Viva Las Vegas' (USA), instead we will do everything to keep this festival plain,
simple and enjoyable for everyone.
If only we could bring the athmosphere of these bigger festivals at affordable prices to you for just one single afternoon each year,
we would be more than happy...

Rockabilly Day zag het daglicht in 2001 toen James Laureyns samen met Oemtata vzw enkele optredens organiseerde waarbij Rockabilly,
classic cars, hotrods, kustoms en motorfietsen centraal stonden.
De enige bedoeling toen was een relaxte zondagnamiddag, waarbij de bezoekers konden genieten van de zon, een biertje, de bands,
de auto's en moto's.
Het eerste jaar ging van start met 'The Wildcats' (plaatselijke band) en 'the Seatsniffers (zonder twijfel België's beste rockabillyband)
+ een redelijk aantal bezoekers, vandaar dan ook de beslissing om het gebeuren een vervolg te geven in 2002.
Gedurende de laatste 7 jaar is Rockabilly Day voortdurend gegroeid (bijna 4500 bezoekers vorig jaar), er zijn nu ook telkens 6 bands
(waaronder enkele buitenlandse), een groter aantal auto's en moto's (sommige zelfs uit Nederland, Frankrijk en Duitsland en Engeland!),
prijsuitreiking, rockabilly D.J., een klein, maar gezellig marktje met 50's kleding, gebruiksvoorwerpen, vynil en CD's.
Geleidelijk aan evolueerde Rockabilly Day naar een klein, maar uiterst gezellig festivalletje, waar iedereen die bereid is om voor
1 enkele dag per jaar de tijdmachine terug naar de fifties te nemen, welkom is (ook al lijken sommige bezoekers nog steeds in die tijd te leven).
Voornamelijk gedurende de laatste 3 jaar, groeide het uiteindelijke concept van Rockabilly Day: een roots-Rockabilly gebeuren,
met speciale aandacht voor 50's lifestyle, kledij, hotrods & kustoms. De enige bedoeling hiervan is een 'overdosis' Rock & Roll aan te bieden,
denk daarbij aan vetkuiven, zwart leder en roll-up jeans 'cats' en pony-tailed 'chicks'. Voeg daarbij nog wat luipaardmotieven en vlammen en het beeld is compleet.
Onze filosofie is om trouw te blijven aan de 'Rockabilly spirit': uiteindelijk is dit het enige festival in zijn soort in België,
waar zowel Rockabilly muziek als oldtimers, kustoms, hotrods en bikes centraal staan. Het is zeker niet onze bedoeling om zo groot te worden
als andere festivals in de zin van 'Hemsby' of 'Rockabilly Rave' (UK) of 'Viva Las Vegas' (USA), nee, Rockabilly Day moet iets gezellig en kleinschalig blijven.
Indien het ons alleen al zou lukken een beetje van de sfeer van die grote festivals voor één namiddag per jaar naar Assenede te brengen, is ons opzet meer dan geslaagd...
